join the calgary roller derby

The Calgary Roller Derby Association holds recruiting nights periodically throughout the year. Join us for one of these sessions if you are interested in being a skater, referee, or support staff volunteer.

Want to be a derby girl? We highly recommend that you get out and skate as much as possible prior to trying out for the league – Lloyd’s Roller Rink is a great place to start! Contact recruiting@calgaryrollerderby.com for more information on our next recruiting drive and tryouts.

So you want to be a roller derby girl?

You Must be 18 years of age or older to be a roller derby girl and proof of age will be required.

When skating as fresh meat (the first few months of your derby girl life), you will pay a reduced dues rate and must attend league and team practices to maintain good standing and learn as much as you can. As roller girls you will be required to pay dues of $40 a month as well as a $50 insurance fee once a year. You are expected to attend a minimum of 75% of practices which is roughly six per month (one league and one team specific per week equalling 4 hours). As we are a self run league, everyone is expected to help out with bouts and other official events and fundraisers. In return for your time and effort, we provide training facilities, coaching, skate development sessions and a kick ass family of derby sisters and brothers. Not to mention the chance to play roller derby!

You are responsible for having the following gear:
  • Roller Skates
  • Mouth Guard
  • Elbow and knee pads
  • Wrist Guards
  • Helmet
You can purchase them from different shops online, for example:
www.rollergirl.ca and www.sincityskates.com
These are two sites that specialize in equipment for roller girls and that also offering Fresh Meat packages. Or you can round up gear from friends and family. For protective gear, skate shops like Mission and Skaters are worth checking into.

Once you pass tryouts you will be placed on the Fresh Meat team for a period of three months or greater and after successfully passing benchmarks you will then be eligible to play in a game with your fellow Roller Girls given that your attendance and skating abilities are up to par. For a full list of benchmark standards, please visit www.wftda.com

You will also have to familiarize yourself with the rules that we play by. We follow a set of rules set by Women’s Flat Track Roller Derby Association, you can find them at: www.wftda.com

Here are a few things we will be looking for when you tryout

COACHES:

Roller Derby is Back!

The Calgary Roller Derby Association is part of the recent flat-track roller derby revival, and our league has just celebrated our one year anniversary of bringing fun, no-holes-barred derby action to the Calgary public. We are growing quickly, and looking for more support staff to help train and coach our skaters.

Are you interested in coaching roller derby? We are putting the call out to the Calgary community, searching for qualified men and women who are interested in contributing to the league. This is a chance for you to get involved in a fantastic, burgeoning, grass-roots movement that is sure to become a staple of the Calgary sports diet in the very near future.

We are looking for coaches who have experience with hockey, ringette, or speed skating who are willing to learn the ins-and-outs of roller derby and help us become the best league in North America! We currently have 3 teams and a group of new recruits needing coaches.
